The Two Witnesses Of Revelation

The Two Witnesses Of Revelation

I was listening to a well-known Texan radio preacher declare that very soon the whole world was going to be thrust into turmoil with the rise of a global dictator (known as the “Anti-christ”, according to this preacher) who will establish a one-world government and begin the greatest era of persecution against Jewish people ever witnessed. I used to regard this type of teaching as irrelevant guess-work, but I now regard this “theology” as incredibly toxic and dangerous. Then to my horror he went on to announce that this dictator would be challenged by two revitalised witnesses who would capture the attention of the whole world by their prophesying and miraculous powers- even being publicly slain then resurrected! There are of course millions of Christians who have innocently accepted this new theology without ever realising that this is an impossible interpretation of Revelation 11.

Is Preterism Biblical?

Is Preterism Biblical?

Preterism comes the Latin word “praeter” which means “past”. When it comes to understanding Bible prophecy all Christians are Preterists to one degree or another. It is only logical and reasonable to examine the past to see if a prophecy has already been fulfilled. Most Christians would acknowledge that Isaiah 7:14 describing a virgin giving birth has been fulfilled in the past. But not all Christians would agree about the nature of prophecies relating to Christ’s “second coming”. Preterists argue that all of the prophecies relating to Christ’s return (as described in Matthew 24) have already been fulfilled. This contrasts with two other schools of prophecy interpretation.

Essentially there are then three general schools of eschatology:

CONFIDENCE IN GOD’S WORD BECAUSE OF BIBLE PROPHECY

CONFIDENCE IN GOD’S WORD BECAUSE OF BIBLE PROPHECY

There are several reasons why we can have confidence that the Bible is truly God’s divinely inspired, infallible, inerrant, Word to mankind. It is historically verifiable, it is experientially testable, it is philosophically credible, but perhaps one of the greatest evidences for the Bible being the divinely inspired Word of God, is fulfilled prophecy.

When the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1946, it gave the world irrefutable proof that the contents of the Book of Isaiah were undoubtedly written before the birth of Christ. This means that the passages of detailed prophecies with Isaiah about the coming Messiah must have been written before the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, actually came…

Why God Still Uses Preachers

Why God Still Uses Preachers

WHY GOD STILL USES PREACHING I once had someone tell me that preaching was no longer necessary in a church service. They reasoned that in the days of the early church there were no copies of the New Testament yet. Therefore, they needed preachers to inform them of...
Christianity’s Most Important Doctrines

Christianity’s Most Important Doctrines

What are the bare essential beliefs of Christianity? What are the other beliefs that are important but not essential for salvation? Some people are very passionate about their particular view of End Times (“Eschatology”) while on the other hand, some people are very indifferent about it. Some Evangelical Denominations have very narrow views about what constitutes acceptable views about Eschatology. In some of these denominations they actually make agreement with their End Times position an essential requirement for ordination. Many people find the topic so difficult that they’s rather not even attempt it. One prominent Seattle preacher recently said that discussing aspects of Eschatology was as important as discussing “wookies” (from the Star Wars movie series)! In one respect he is right, in that, there are several Biblical doctrines which are far more important than Eschatology. But…

Disagreeing Well

One of the facets of being an adult is learning how to get along with those you don’t always agree with. Many of my ministry friends have different perspectives on Scripture, politics, and church. For the most part, I have found that I do not need to ‘de-friend’ these colleagues over these sorts of issues. This doesn’t mean that I don’t have strong opinions about these matters – opinions which I am happy to share where appropriate, even with those who disagree.

Growing As A Pastor

Growing As A Pastor

Being a pastor is the highest privilege someone could ever receive because they have devoted their life to fellowship with Christ, the Source of Life, their hearts to love God, the Source of Love, their minds to understand the Bible, the Source of Wisdom, and their efforts to preaching, the means of Grace for everlasting salvation of a soul. What a privilege!

WHEN THERE’S NO GOOD OPTION The people of America will soon be voting for their new President. In life, we are sometimes faced with choices which offer us no attractive option. It is in times like those where we might use two filters to help us come to a...
Beyond The Veil of Familiarity

Beyond The Veil of Familiarity

One of the greatest things that I have learned from looking at the life and work of Dr. F.W. Boreham is that life’s greatest treasures are often obscured by the veil of familiarity. It often takes an outsider to see plainly what most locals do not. This sometimes sad fact was highlighted in some recent release movies such as “Spotlight” and “Concussion” where it was some outsiders who helped the locals see the gross injustices happening right under their noses. And I think the same phenomena often happens with how we read the Bible.
This was reinforced to me the other day when I spoke with a pastor about the Olivet Discourse (which occurs in Matthew 24 and 25). I simply asked some ‘familiarity-challenging’ questions about this passage. “Have you noticed that the word return does not occur in Matthew 24?” was one of the questions I asked. This challenge to consider this passage from a different perspective led to this pastor remarking, “How many other things have I just accepted without questioning to see if it was really what the Bible taught?” If you’ve ever wondered the same thing, here’s a few short articles which may give you a new perspective …
